Waimate

I was sitting on top of Grandview Mountain in Wanaka when I saw a job advertisement for a teacher in Waimate. Fast forward a week and I'd just finished cycling the Otago Central Rail Trail and was on my way to Stewart Island when I accepted the job offer at the local high school. I'd not heard of Waimate before this time but if ever a good decision was made, this was it. Beautiful views, beautiful people and a whole lot of exploring to be done. I'll be updating this gallery as and when I find new things. Stay tuned!

Most people come to Waimate from State Highway 1, as they're travelling between Timaru and Oamaru. This is a good place to start your Waimate adventure. Stop off at Nosh, just off the highway, for some most delicious food to fill you up. In Waimate, enjoy walking around the town enjoying the quirky architecture. Visit the silo art on the main street.  Take a walk up to Whitehorse Hill (you can drive too if you're short on time). On a clear day you can enjoy sea and mountain views from the top. If you have a mountain bike, enjoy riding a couple of the trails that are dotted around the mountainside.
