Waitangi Day

Waitangi Day is a public holiday that is celebrated on February 6th every year.

Waitangi Day refers to the Waitangi Treaty which was signed in 1840 between Maori and the British. Whilst there has been some controversy regarding the document, the day itself is a plethora of waka (canoe) sailing, haka performances as well as traditional singing and dancing with people in full Maori costume. And of course, there's plenty of food and sunshine. This was absolutely one of my favourite days in New Zealand and if you ever get the chance to visit Waitangi on February 6th, I can't recommend it highly enough. You may even get to meet the Prime Minister!
